I've been getting into British telly, which does not bode well for the future of my research, but some is just too good to miss. Take Mastermind for example, a quiz show in which members of the public are quizzed on such subjects as “Cremation practices in medieval Shropshire”. The contestants are, often as not, fabulously nerdy gardeners or retired civil servants. The show has no fancy sets or flashy presenters, and the winner gets nothing other than the chance to proceed to the next round. Should they be sagacious enough to win the entire series they get….a glass bowl. Superb.

Mmm, fab isn't it! Try Deal or No Deal - that's full of chavs! Definately chavtastic!
The winner also gets a go on the most ludicrous of nerdfextic programmes "Eggheads".
Oh, I hate Deal or No Deal: what's the point of it? There aren't even any questions! Eggheads is great, though.
Wonder if they get these programs in Scotland? It will be part of my "understanding the local culture" research!
Oh yes, Pix. You can get them in Scotland. My mum watches them.
They repeat the things ad nauseam up here in Scotland... even Mum gets fed up with the number of repeats. And why is it we get just the occasional (repeated) film just because we can't afford to subscribe to the movie channel? Seems wrong to me.
